Journals & Publications Guide

Academic Journals

While there are many journals that publish work related to architectural history (including journals of disciplines such as art history, geography, and anthropology), this section serves as an introduction to some major journals specific to architectural history. This is not only to help researchers seeking publication, but also readers seeking to discriminate between published work.

Firstly, the three most internationally prominent academic societies of the discipline – the SAH, the SAHGB, and the EAHN (see Field Index for details) – all publish major (arguably the flagship) journals. These are:

Architectural History

Published since xxxx by the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain (SAHGB) in association with the University of Cambridge. The oldest running journal on the subject. Publishes original, in-depth research on all periods and places.

Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians

Architectural Histories

Apart from these, other major journals include:

  • The Art Bulletin
  • ABE: Architecture Beyond Europe

Other Publications

  • Architectural Review Perhaps the most academically significant global architecture magazine. Publishes high quality (sometimes scholarly) writing. Published from London.
  • Architecture Plus Design Indian architectural journal/magazine with some historically significant content but now mostly flash.
  • Architectural Digest Global architecture magazine with a local edition in India. Part of Condé Nast publications and highly commercialised.
